Im guessing you are using Vista. to turn on Defender and Firewall just go to start at bottom left click once then go to Control panel and then click on Security Center you will see categories for firewall and Malware protection where windows defender is located

AVG free version works great at cnet.com...lotsa freebie versions there...got avg and 6 viruses locked up in the "vault"...try it.
