Problems with Antivirus and VPN connection.....?

I recently bought a new computer( has windows Vista). I have a VPN connection to my college Intranet. When I got the computer it had a trial of Norton Internet antivirus. I wanted to use AVG Free version, but for some reason the AVG would not let me get on the Internet at all (when I called a friend they said they had this problem also). So I just used the Norton till it expired and had no trouble. I did not have the money (going to school and working less) to buy a antivirus, so I got the 90 day free trial of One Care. I like it but I am having trouble connecting to the VPN. I have to shut off my Firewalls to connect to the VPN, and then I can access some of my files in the college Intranet, but it won't bring up the college home page like it should. After a few min it shuts down my VPN connection. Any tips on how to fix this? Any other Free anti-virus programs that are good? Or any ideas how I can fix the problem with AVG free version?

I recently got internet (finally) and I am looking for the best firewall and antivirus/anti-spy protection, preferably a free download if it's good. Here's some I looked at on PC World: avast, avg, a-squared, ad-aware, jetico. I also already had windows defender, yahoo anti-spy, and live onecare safety scanner. Are any of these any good? Also when I bought the laptop years ago it came with mcafee and norton but they are the old (2002) versions. would they be worth keeping? I have heard that Norton slows pcs down, which i don't want, and that you should only have one antivirus program running. is this true and if so, why? I don't do much more online than surf for fun, email, and once in awhile order stuff, so it isn't exactly high profile but I want to be safe. Any help would be appreciated!

Dump the Norton and the McAfee, they will be useless as they are way out of date. I would definitely uninstall both.

I am guessing that a computer that old has very little RAM. You probably would want to use a "light" firewall.

The downloads like Symantec Antivirus are just fine. The 90-day trial is for the virus definitions; it doesn't mean the antivirus program is crippled until you buy it. However, after that 90 days, you won't get new virus definitions so you won't be protected unless you buy the subscription.

There are several other free antivirus programs such as AVG and Avast, and they have been known to do a great job without putting a choke-hold on your operating system like Symantec.

I haven't heard of the two applications you mentioned, but they shouldn't interfere with the antivirus side of Symantec. However, if you have Symantec's security suite, it comes with a firewall already, so having two of them will more than likely create an issue. Be sure you download just the antivirus.

I was at a website and all of the sudden, what looked like a legitimate Windows message box popped up that said "If your computer is infected, you could suffer data loss, erratic PC behaviour, PC freezes and crahes. (behavior and crashes were misspelled in the message box) It goes on to say that XP antivirus will check my computer for free, when I hit cancel it took me to a page with another (cheesey looking) message box and is asking me to download the file. I'm sure I shouldn't download, but even when I click the ignore button I get 'do you want to run or save this file', I hit cancel and am taken back to the cheesey looking message box. I use Free AV and for it's constant monitoring of accessed/opened/read/written programs, I notice no noticeable slowdown whatsoever. The only time that I do is when I acutally scan my HD for viruses once a week, but that's any program.

I have McAfee and it works great on my PC. Just be aware that anti virus programs do not get all the virus. I recently went to microsoft.com and had them run a free online virus scan on my computer. You can also go to www.geekstogo.com or is it www.geeks2go.com, it's one or the other, i they will recommend an online scan for ya.

The pop-ups are probably SpyWare/AdWare which Anti-Virus does not detect. You should get SpyBot for those issues. Make sure to run the update after you install.

AVG and AVAST and Fsecure and almost any anti virus will give u a free period of use "nothing is FREE" any way. there are some virus and trojans that cant not be deleted the usual way with an anti virus coz they stuck in the system and u need a special tool and the special tools u find it on www.symantec.com but u need the name of the trojan or the virus first.

I would say you should find out the processes that they run, disconnect from the internet, go into task manager and go to processes and end all the virus processes you have stopped the viruses until you restart now reconnect to the internet and scan with AVG make sure to write the virus paths down on a bit of paper now restart and start hitting F8 now choose safe mode and wait for your computer to boot up now go to the virus file paths and delete them. I do not know if this will work but try it if you must reinstall windows that should work

I havent used Norton in a long time but I think you can update it for free for 1 year from when you installed it. After that I think you have to pay for renewal or subscription to continue getting updates.

Try AVG Anti-virus which is free and not as bloated and cumbersome as Norton is, once you install any Norton product it is difficult to fully remove it.

AVG Free is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

Go to http://www.majorgeeks.com. They have far and away the BEST selection of freeware and shareware, with reviews as well. I personally use avast! and have used it for 3 years. I ditched Norton and McAffee on all of our computers and put Avast on them and never regretted it. Not only is it FREE, but in my opinion MUCH BETTER. You have to 're-register' every 14 months, but that is free too. It automatically updates it's definitions over the Internet all the time. I mean many times a week! It's always downloading new definitions and I don't have to do a thing.

You are smart to ask about spyware also. Nowdays it seems there are more of these gremlins going around than viruses! They not only can invade your privacy, but they slow down your computer, hog your resources, and generally make your computer usage a pain. My 2 personal favs are Ad-Aware from LavaSoft and SpyBot. I have both installed on all of our computers. I update them at least once a week and run full scans at least once a week, and ALWAYS find stuff. These are also both free and both available at majorgeeks.com.

AVG offers a scaled down version of their Pro that is 100% free. You will get a daily update and can schedule your scans whenever you wish.

If it shows up in your Uninstall list START there by uninstalling it. Then go to http://download.com and get TweakNow Restistry Cleaner Std and/or Ccleaner...both free. AVG is as good as you can get for antivirus protection.

If you have Windows XP, you have a build-in firewall that's as good as one you can buy, but if you don't have XP, then ZoneAlarm is a good one to get. You do need a firewall along with the antivirus. But that's not all you need. As good as it is, AVG won't protect your computer against spyware, trojans, adware, etc. For that, you need the combination of SpyBot Search %26 Destroy and Ad-Aware, both free from download.com.

But remember this: these things are only as good as you make them. they must be updated regularly and used regularly. Do a virus scan as soon as you install AVG.

Immunize the computer in SpyBot as soon as you get it installed, then run a full bot check. Remove everything it finds using Fix Selected Problems.

Run a full system scan in Ad-Aware, and remove everything it finds. Don't quarantine it, remove it.

Thereafter, AVG will update itself, but you have to update SpyBot and Ad-Aware weekly to keep them current. Then use them regularly to keep your computer free of junk and running smoothly.

Hey I recently downloaded an antivirus program called COGECO security services. Ever since it has been on my computer firefox netscape and limewire dont work. When firefox comes up the screen is blank. never downlaod anything that is antivirus and free. the best thing you can do it fix this is roll back your xp to the time before you installed the cogeco. if that does not work, reinstall xp.

I did my own test on the 4 free ones I know of (AntiVir, AVG, Bitdefender, Avast). I couldn't find any decent reviews that I trusted, so I conducted my own test.

I took a machine and went to every bad idea I could think of. Once my machine locked up with bugs, I copied the hard drive 4 times and installed bitdefender, antivir, avg, and avast on each partition and saw how well they did.

bitdefender was the best, but the free scanner, did not do real time scanning (fine for me, but bad for my customers), so I choose #2 Antivir which was really close to #1 and easy to setup. AVG came in farther down at #3 and avast was last.

An interesting side note to the story was that I recopied 2 of the partitions to their buggy state and ran a trial of Norton and McGafee on them and 3 out of 4 of the free scanners beat them both with 1/4 of the overhead.

I did this almost 6 months ago, so things may have changed, but I'm sticking with antivir at http://free-av.com

PS: I just read some statements above and wanted to mention a couple of things I agree with. http://www.download.com is a great place to start when looking for any program. Ad-aware is a great addition to fighting bugs. It can be found at http://www.lavasoft.de

Having an up to date anti-virus is very important (it only takes 2 minutes on average for your computer to be compromised). Norton is bloatware and I would not recommend it at all. Any hoo ... this "buy our antivirus" site keeps popping up - saying I've got a Trojan horse, and it has installed a toolbar on my computer. I've now installed my FREE version from BT, but I think it's too late. That sounds like adware. I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S%26D (they鈥檙e free), install them, update them and run them. If any of the above don't seem to be able to get rid of everything it reports finding, try running it again, this time in Safe Mode. Safe Mode often prevents the malware from running and protecting itself.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.

2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3.Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.

4.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. Log in as Administrator. Administrator often has no password.

Raptor Defence Plus is a scam. It's what's known as rogue antispyware. You may prefer A-squared or Spybot
it will not crash / clash usually, if it does then don't use them at the same time.

Don't use one. Reboot and restore programs work so much better. Just restart and all infections disappear. In fact you have to disable the program to install anything you want after the current session. There isn't a better protection method.

McAfee works great for me, but most of my friends use AVG.
I don't use any of the free security solutions. Not that I don't think they won't work well in some situations, but due to how much malware is being created every day, and the fact the virus labs just can't keep up, I prefer to be as safe as possible and so buy a suite from Panda. I have never had an infection, and receive daily and sometimes several times a day, updates.

Everyone is going to have their preferences in security software. As such, this is my preference. I don't care for McAfee or Norton for the simple fact that they put so called "trial" software on machines which are prebuilt when the customer has not asked for any such software. These vendors know full well how difficult it is to remove this type of software, with special removal tools needed for most firewalls and anti-virus programs. Panda is the only one I know for sure that can be removed with the Windows Add/Remove applet.

They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall.
