I need help. Could someone tell me if its ok to have both antivirus and spyware on my computer?

If so then can you tell me which ones i can use that are good for my computer? Also if they are free or not? Are antivirus and spyware two different things, because i know that if you have two of the same type of protection software on your computer it causes problems. Could you please recommend some? Thanks a bunch to everyone who answers!
